Promotion of the publication "The City in Transition - From Ecological, Socio-Spatial, Architectural Change to а Sustainable City: Skopje Between Theory and Opportunities"

How to properly measure the needs of the modern city and modernize it while preserving its traditional and authentic values? How about a sustainable city through just environmental, socio-spatial and architectural changes? These and many other issues will be the impetus for Iva Petrunova and Emina Rustemovska, to combine theory with practical challenges and identify the possibilities for (re)building Skopje into a time-consuming metabolic city, tailored to the needs of the citizens.

Organized by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and City of Skopje on November 13th, (Skopje’s Liberation Day) the key thesis and recommendations of this publication were promoted in front of a wide audience within the premises of the Skopje Living Lab. The promotion was followed by an open discussion with representatives of City of Skopje, environmental CSOs and academia.

The publication covers both the course and the developmental stages of the urbanization of Skopje, referring to all significant sociological changes that undoubtedly left a mark in its history and somehow are part of the identification of the city today. Neolithic, Antiquity, Middle Ages, Ottoman Period, Balkan and World Wars, Post-Earthquake Period, End of XX Century, Skopje 2014. The publication elaborates the challenges in current living conditions, taking into account the consequences of all mentioned periods, while at the same time offering possible solutions from sustainable urban planning through an ecological, economic, cultural and administrative point of view.
